Q: 2008 Volvo s40?
Am in love with the looks of the new s40 and i really wanna buy one . Am sick of seeing hondas ( eventhough i own one) and Toyotas everywhere. But the only thing that is keeping me back is that I heard since Ford bought Volvo that their cars went down the drain. Are those cars reliable? I know that they probably cost little more to maintain then the honda but it sure is probably cheaper then a bmw or a benz. If there are any Volvo owners reading this please respond how you like your car ( 2000-2008) and how is it reliable and if the maintainance is to high on it? So is it worth buying it?

A: If you buy new, the Volvo S40 has a high cost of ownership compared to Acura TSX or Lexus IS250. Higher depreciation cost is a major cost factor. Because of the high initial depreciation, the S40 makes a good used choice after 3 years. Purchase price for a 2005 will be almost exactly half the cost of a 2008. Volvo reliability has actually improved since Ford.

Q: should i get the Volvo S40 2008?
well i am getting my first car and i was wondering if the S40 2008 is a good car? any opinions on it...thanks

A: You could not have chosen a better car as your first car! The S40 is great looking, very peppy and VERY safe. The integrity of the Volvo vehicles is incredible and contrary to some of the opinions you have gotten here, the vehicle will last you a very long time if you take care of it. I challenge you to have a salesman at any other manufacturer (aka Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Toyota, etc) open the hood and slam it down as hard as you can. They simply won't do it because the integrity of the car would be compromised. Not on a Volvo. I slam them down every day and the vehicle barely moves. (By the way, I am a 6 foot tall body builder. I can slam them hard). What this example proves is that the structural integrity of these vehicles is just the tip of the ice burgh! Safety comes from integrity and if they build their cars that tough, then their engines must be as well. In fact, the 2.5T engine is on consumer reports top 10 engines and this past month, the same publication said that Volvo's were the cheapest vehicles to maintain in their class. Lexus was next and they were $2,345 more to maintain in a 3 year period! It is a common misconception that you must use high octane fuel and that you must go to the dealer to get an oil change. Not true. 87 octane is fine and Jiffy Lube does a fine job on many of my customers vehicles. It is true that major repairs may cost a little more, but that is because you are entering into the luxury car market and you have no worries about that for the first 4 years, 50,000 miles anyway! Also, purchase an extended warranty (through Volvo) and you won't have any repair concerns for 7yrs or 100k! (they cast about $2000 and are well worth it). Finally, did you know that Volvo is the only manufacturer that has a Million Mile car club? They have over 17,000 members and in order to be in that club, you must have an original car, with the original engine and transmission! No other manufacturer can boast that! Good luck with your new car. You've made a wise choice! If you have any further questions, feel free to email me at Rbulmer@gengras.com

Q: Volvo s40 vs Toyota Corolla(2008)?
I'm a new driver and my parents are debating getting one of these two cars .. obviously the Volvo is safer, but I'm more concerned about the turning radius. My dad has a volvo s70 and its awful to drive, the steering wheel is really heavy and its hard to turn left/right. How hard is the volvo s40 to drive in relation to a car like a Toyota Corolla? I know that on a Corolla tapping the wheel makes the car fly to the left or right.

A: The Volvo is by far the better way to go. The radius on the S40 is much smaller than the S70. If you are truly concerned, take one for a test drive. Most Volvo dealers are not the hard core sales pressure dealers that Toyota dealers can be so they will be happy to let you test one out. Safety, as you pointed out, cannot even be compared. The Volvo is literally thousands of times safer than any Toyota. As far as one of your respondants saying the Toyota having a higher resale value, that is insanity. They are not even in the same market. Case in point, I have a 2004 S40 on my lot for $17900 and it sold new for $24349! No Toyota that sold for that much is worth that today! The steering is heavy because the S40 was built for performance. If you allow the power steering to assist you to much, you will not have real control of the car. The tighter the steerin, the better control you have. This is particularly important when you need to steer out of the way in a hurry. If you have to much power steering, you could easily loose control. Obvioulsy, being a smaller car than the S70, the S40 will turn a lot smoother. One other thing to keep in mind is the new C30. Great little car with great gas mileage. I wish you the best of luck with your decision and congrats on the new car. If you have any further questions, you can email me at rbulmer@gengras.com. I will be happy to answer any question you may have.

Q: What is more expensive to repair? a BMW 321 series or a volvo s40?
are this cars expensive to fix? how often do they go bad or how reliable are they. what abouth insurance??? is it better to purchas a 2008 toyota scion for 13,000$ and cero miles comparing with purchasing a 2005 volvo s40 or a 2003 BMW with 69000 miles bouth what is the best choice the cero mile toyota or the 2005 69k miles volvo/BMW thanks!

A: Both used vehicles will last another 50,000 miles without too much trouble. The Toyota will last much longer since it is new but will get much better gas mileage. I would choose the Toyota.

Q: Pros and Cons to buying a volvo S40?
2008 basic model, for a 17 year old going to college....

A: You could not have considered a safer vehicle for your child to drive! I cringe when I hear of people buying cars that have very low safety ratings for their young drivers. Volvos, as I am sure you have heard, are very safe vehicles. Every one of them gets a 5 star for safety at each of the crash zones on every one of their cars. Saabs, unlike what the person above me as said, do not even come close to comparison. Like he said, Saab is geared toward performance. Volvo has three principles in this order... 1. Safety 2. Value 3. Environment. These principles have been there since their inception in 1927. Volvo actually has a team of over 200 people all over the world who go and investigate accidents so that they can build their cars to be safe in any accident. Their cars far exceed the safety standards needed to attain those 5 stars. In my opinion, you can not find a nicer car for the money. Volvos compete with Mercedes, Audi, BMW, etc but they are less expensive and actually have more standard bells and whistles. Environmentally, Volvos again are the forefront leader. Each car is actually 85% recyclable and they plan on upping that number to 95% by 2012! All in all, what a wonderful choice for your young driver. I will be honest that the maintanence is a little more expensive ($40 oil changes) however, you are in the luxury car market and by comparison, they are cheaper to maintain than any of their competitors. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at rbulmer@gengras.com Contact me with the numbers and I will tell you if you are getting a good deal. As you might have guessed, i have inside info! Good luck with your purchase and also to your son as he enters college. PS. Kelly has said that they are phasing out the S40 next year. That is simply not the case. What they are doing is limiting the amount coming into the states because the American Dollar is hurting and they loose money on them when they send them here. That being said, it only makes your choice of a S40 wiser as this will make their resale values stay higher. I too am a Volvo consultant and would be more than happy to field any questions you may have in the future. Feel free to email me at rbulmer@gengras.com

Q: Car Decision Help?
My father made me a deal. He told me if I get a full ride scholarship to college he would buy my the car of my choice. I have narrowed it down to 3 different models. I would like to know what car you would choose. I don't want you to pick one because it cost more. I would like your opinion on quality, handling, and the other goodies. My choices are the 2008 BMW 328i, 2008 Acura TL, and the 2008 Volvo S40. NO, I'm not spoiled. Its a deal. These cars cost less than $45,000. Thats the cost of tuition. I live in Georgia so we get snow every 1,000,000,000,000 years. I still can't decide. I have heard that BMWs are suckie they are just expensive, and have a reputation. Now moving on to the other person. I don't like the TSX they look like cheap race cars. Moving on once again. I'm not gay you stuid MO FO! I'm just professional I don't want a car like that. When I get older I will buy a Porsh, or a Lambo. Now I want a nice car. I don't really like Intiniti cars. Not enough to drive one anyway. I understand the thing about the cost insurance. That makes since. Now dude, do everyone a favor and KILL YOUR SELF!! If my father wants to do it then he can. After years of hard work in highschool I schould be rewarded. Please...Please Kill Your Self! Woops... I left one out. I also like the Lexus IS

A: If there is snow where you are living, then you would want to go with the Acura or Volvo since they are front wheel drive. Or you could get the BMW 330xi, that is all wheel drive. The Acura is a really nice car, (and fast) if you get it with the manual transmission. The Volovo is safe and not too flashy. The BMW handles the best out of all of them.

Q: Car help please?
Which would be a better first car for me, a 2009 Acura TSX or a 2008 Volvo S40? Thank you.

A: Since it is your first car, go for the Volvo for safety reasons. The Acura is a rocket and for a first timer it will only get you into trouble. the Volvo will get you anywhere you need to go just as fast.

Q: What's your opinion on these cars?
Hi, I'm looking into buying a car in about 4 to 6 months and am trying to decide between a few different models. Regardless of what I end up with, I want to buy a newer used one to help cut the cost just a tiny bit. I'm looking at either the 2007 or 2008 Camry SE or XLE, a 2005-2008 Volvo S40 or a 2006-2007 Lexus IS. I also like the Lincoln MKZ but haven't been to a dealership yet. Can anyone tell me pros and cons on these models? I NEED safe (first priority), reliable and a decent amount of room (meaning don't want people to be cramped) but would like a cute car I can be excited about if that fits into the equation as well. Also, if you could tell me your source (internet, personal opinion, friend's/your expierence) that would really help!! Thanks for helping!

A: I really like the lexus IS. I have been in one and i thought the ride was pretty good and the interior was nice and comfortable. I also like the redesigned Camry (the 07 or later model) Its a really like car (my friend has one) and I think there is more room overall than the other ones. I cant comment on the other cars (S40 and the MKZ) because i dont know anybody that has one. Sorry. I think the Camry is a good buy. Its a midsized sedan, pretty safe (got curtain airbags front and rear standard) and its probably the one with the most room. The Lexus isnt bad either, but its just a little smaller than the camry (overall length wise, but it didnt feel small when i was in it)

Q: 4Runner, S40, or Sonata?
I am looking for a new car and these are my top picks: 2003-2004 Toyota 4Runner 50-60,000 miles 2004-2006 (redesigned) Volvo S40 40-50,000 miles 2007-2008 Hyundai Sonata 15-30,000 miles My price range is around $16,000 so this is what I could come up with. I realize I could get a new entry level car like a Focus, Cobalt, etc. but I would rather buy something used but nicer. Any information on reliability, maintenance/repair costs, etc. on the cars listed would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

A: 4 runner. its reliable.. itll last forever.. POWER!!! and its nice.

Q: car question?
ok well i was thinking of getting the volvo S40 2008 but my mom wants to to get my sisters car, which is a Tx Acura 2006. Any opinions on which one to chose. Thanks (this is going to be my first car)

A: You'll be happier with the Acura.

Q: Which vehicle is better (in both value and quality)?
I am about to start driving and I have a few choices for my first vehicle. 1) 2006 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 2) 2006 Volvo S40 T5 AWD, or I could wait until mid-2007 and get a 2008 Land Rover Freelander (which will be named the LR2). Which vehicle has the best quality and value?(basically 'Bang for the Buck'

A: I would suggest you wait for the freelander but it will be more expensive than present version. Volvo looks like a better bet as they are quite reliable& have a good safety record. Jaguar is quite dated & hardly revolutionary.

Q: would this be a good first car?
i was wonderin would a Volvo S40 be a good first car. the one i saw was a 2008 for $24,998 hoiw safe do you think it would be? would the insurance be higher than a jeep

A: Any car can be a first car. But first you need to do your sums whether you will be able to afford all the necessary things to owned a car.

Q: Which car?!?
My husband and I-both 25 years old-are trying to choose between two cars from a local Honda Dealer: 1. 2004 Volvo S40 fully loaded for $17250 with 40k miles 2. 2008 Honda Civic brand new/fully loaded for $22000 with a 100000 mile warranty *These prices include tax/tags We like the idea of the Honda because of gas mileage and the fact that they seem to be retaining value--plus it's brand new! We can purchase a warranty on the Volvo (not sure how much), but we are nervous about gas mileage and also the fact that it has 40k miles--and maintanence prices. However, with the Honda we would have payments of $265/month and need $8k down. With the Volvo, our payments would be $190/month and need $6k down. Which car would you choose and why? What is the best overall option???

A: The warranty on the volvo will be 2000 dollars or more. The wholes sale price is 1400 dollars, and you wont get that price, you get a mark up, so it will be atleast 2000 dollars. Now your financing at least 19250. And now compare the cars. The volvo is half old and almost the same price. GO with the Honda, they have great resale, great gas mileage, great warranty. I wouldn't see anything else why to get the volvo. Because when its paid for .. it will be 2013, now would you rather have a 9 year old car or 5 year old car? B/c when you go to trade it in or sale it. It will matter. Go with the honda, good luck and good shopping.

Q: First Car For Teen?
I'm going to be getting my first car soon, and im really intrested in the Volvo S60 and Volvo S40, which one do you think will be better for a first car, i like the s60 more because its roomier. and could i get some insurance quotes? these are all 2008 models. and money is not a problem. wow, people i just wanted an opinion and was wondering what you guys think. dont be trippin and saying that im spoiled. stupid retards. i started investing in stocks since i was 10, and i made fairly 40k. so shut up and stop saying s***

A: Don't pay any attention to the jerks on here! Good for you that you can afford a nice new car. Volvos are one of the best cars made. Any model would be a good choice but my preference is the S60. They have had #1 ratings in crash tests and reliability for years. Saabs also rank high alongside Volvos. To check insurance quotes go to Progressive's website. You'll fill out an online form and they will give you their quote plus several more from other companies. Insurance will of course be high on any new car at your age but given these cars safety ratings you should be able to afford it. Just get whichever one you feel most comfortable in. Good Luck!

Q: What is more expensive to repair? a BMW 321 series or a volvo s40?
